History
(Whoops I wrote way more than I thought I would. For those who don't wanna read the whole thing, I have a tl;dr at the bottom.)
---
When Lanhua was born, her parents vowed that she would have a happy, safe life. They didn't want to expose her to what darkness lurked in Orre or in any other part of the world, nor did they want her to get involved in Pokemon battling (even though such was common in Orre). Phenac City seemed fairly safe, and there was plenty to do in or near the oasis. In her parents' eyes, it was the perfect setting to raise their daughter in.
Lanhua had fun running through the streets; playing in the fountain (though she was often scolded for it); looking at two people and "pairing" them together and making up stories about her "ship"; and, on some occasions, visiting Realgam Tower to play some of the games there, provided they didn't involve Pokemon battling. It was also at Realgam that Lanhua saw fireworks for the first time. The display mesmerized her, and served as a catalyst for two things: a vivid memory, and a dream to become a pyrotechnician upon growing up. Her overprotective parents wouldn't let her get up close and personal with sparklers, let alone fireworks, but they did purchase a book about them so she could learn the basics. This made Lanhua happy, and she began carrying the book all over the place, reading it whenever she got the opportunity. Yes, she was living the happy life, oblivious to the world's evils, as her parents had hoped.
Not long after Lanhua's twelfth birthday, Team Cipher invaded Phenac, trying to force people to join. Those who had Pokemon and could battle fought back, of course, but both Lanhua and her parents had no experience battling, let alone owned Pokemon. They tried escaping, but were caught by some Cipher members outside of the city. Lanhua's parents, who were very timid and submissive, decided they--along with Lanhua--would join the evil team. Thus started Lanhua's days of darkness.
Team Cipher separated Lanhua from her parents, taking the young girl to their lair north of Phenac. The child had no clue where her parents were taken, nor would she ask out of fear of being punished. She was forced to take in four Pokemon (likely stolen) and battle against other Cipher members for chores. As expected, Lanhua lost most battles (the ones she won were through luck) and was made to do many chores. If she did a good job, she would get a somewhat decent meal and place to sleep. If she did poorly, she was punished either physically or was given no food and forced to sleep in a pitch black, confined room. Lanhua never stood up to Team Cipher, nor did she say much; she didn't want to make the situation worse for her or her parents--if they were even still alive.
Lanhua's misery continued for six long years. The only things keeping her from falling into a deep depression were her Pokemon, which she had gotten attached to, and the book on fireworks she was somehow allowed to keep. This book helped her recall the fireworks display she had seen and her desire to one day make a fireworks display that was just as pretty, if not prettier. Of course, this dream seemed bleak as there was no opportunity for Lanhua to practice with fireworks, but she hoped that some day she would be set free.
For some reason, one of the Cipher Admins decided it would be a good idea to have Lanhua come along with them on an "enlistment" spree. They headed over to Gateon Port, and many Cipher members began terrorizing its residents. Amidst the chaos, Lanhua found her chance to escape. She made way for one of the ships, which was about to depart to escape capture. The teen didn't know where it would take her, nor did she care so long as she was away from Cipher.
Fortunately, the ship traveled far away from Orre, docking in Castelia City, Unova. While there, Lanhua came across a Team Plasma member advertising their team's goals: a world where Pokemon battling would not exist, where Pokemon would be simply seen as friends instead of tools. At this point, Lanhua had gotten used to battling--and had even gotten somewhat decent at it--but she still strongly felt against battling. Additionally, she saw becoming part of the team an opportunity to hone her skills as a pyrotechnician. (And Team Plasma could possibly benefit from lovely fireworks displays at campaigns, she figured.) Thus, she joined the team and helped whenever she could while working with fireworks.
---
tl;dr: Lanhua dislikes battling and wants to be a pyrotechnician and make pretty fireworks. She was forced to join Team Cipher and was separated from her parents. She was part of the team for six years, then managed to escape in Gateon Port. Lanhua ended up in Unova and joined Team Plasma.
