History
Anyanka Valentine grew up believing in a beautiful world, and subsequently had a very happy childhood. I know, not what you were expecting. Her father was a preacher; her mother was a flower shop owner. As an only child, she grew up sheltered from even petty quarrels among children, completely cut off from the evils of the world. Her father and mother both filled her head with grand tales about life and love and the pursuit of happiness, and she blindly trusted them, as any naive child would have been prone to do. The years of childhood were blissful and happy, but they were simply constructed of one-way mirrors, soon to be shattered.
As she entered her teenage years, she started a descent down a darker path. The day that marked the point of no return was the one where she came home to her mother on the floor, dead, of suicide. As it would turn out, Anya’s father had been sleeping with another woman for months. She’d been tempting him as a form of blackmail against the church, and Anya was disgusted with it. So, when certain people heard about this tragic and lost young girl, she was in no mind to turn down their offer of getting stronger and getting revenge.
Under the guidance of a guild of “black hands” so to speak, Anya received her first Pokémon, a Vulpix whom she named after her mother, Sofia. For years, under different mentors, she trained in the art of stealth and graceful killing. Her one tracked revenge filled mind rarely had time to stop and ponder the ethics of her work – all she cared about was getting even with a world that’d shattered hers. At the age of 17, she’d already taken down multiple targets, but she was ready to make her most important contract of her life. She successfully hunted down and killed the woman who’d ruined her perfect family unit. However, after the kill, when offered the chance to take her father’s life too, she found that she couldn’t do it, and left the organization to join a Pokémon team to focus on training Sofia.
Upon joining Team Galactic, Anya was free to run her life as she wished, for the most part. She became well acquainted with the darker side of life – to her, true peace is an illusion. She’ll still take the occasional contract for assassination if someone is willing to pay enough for her skills, but she’s always careful to keep these operations under wraps. Now, with more time on her hands and her revenge mostly taken care of, those ethical judgments of the life she’d chosen to live come back to haunt her mind, making her question her entire existence in the world she’d created for herself.
